Reading the report of the Chicago-area quake, I was amused at the comments of an affected resident. Doug Dupont of Belvidere, Illinois, was quoted as saying “This is not California. This is northern Michigan. We are not supposed to get earthquakes.”
Mr Dupont, I understand from the article that you have a foot-long crack in your kitchen wall… is that the only crack in your house?
Tectonic plates slide and shift around, but last we checked, Belvidere is still in northern ILLINOIS!!!

So now the question is whether quotes are really “quotes”, or if they are subject to editing. Did Doug Dupont really say “Michigan” or did the copy editor just have a mental lapse?
