Along with the story of the pregnant bank robber, AOL saw fit to also display information about Jennifer Leigh Rice.
Jennifer was an elementary school teacher in Tacoma, Washington. She wins this month’s prize for the “What Was She Thinking?” contest.
Back in 2007, the then-31-year-old teacher was arrested for having sex with a 10-year-old student. As a result of the investigation and trial, it was disclosed that she was also having sex with the 15-year-old brother.
Jennifer, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING????
She was convicted this week of first degree kidnapping with sexual intention, first degree child molestation, and two counts of third degree child rape. Jennifer can face up to 25 years in prison. She won’t be sentenced until June 5th. Clearly she has issues and needs help. Sadly, she may not get that in prison.
The husband and her own children will be left to pick up the pieces.
So the questions have to be asked—Did she learn nothing from the case of Mary Kay Letourneau? Did she think she was different and could get away with this? And maybe more importantly, what is it that makes a grown-up go around the corner on logical, legal, and moral issues like this? I doubt many of you who read this, if you’re an adult, can even fathom a relationship with a 10-year-old.
Of course, such things do happen. It’s part of the depraved and amoral society in which we find ourselves. And sad to say, it’s all around us. Sometimes closer than we’d like to admit.
