The headline sounds like a joke: “Venezuela to give island to New Jersey“.
It piqued my interest since New Jersey is my home state. I read the article to see if New Jersey was to own part of the South American country, or if there was something else afoot. Turns out there is something else afoot. Citgo, the Venezuelan oil company which was nationalized by President Hugo Chavez, happens to own an island in the Delaware River. Using Earth Day as a backdrop, the president magnanimously announced that he would give the island back to New Jersey—by 2020.
Now, if only the State of New Jersey would give the land—island and mainland included—back to the original owners: the Lenni Lenape Indians.
Nah! We have more hope of a South American dictator giving back land than we do for our government giving back any more than it has to. Then it finds a way to take it back.
