For the second time in my life, I had the pleasure of hearing this man “in concert”. Actually, each time was more like a live worship service than a concert. This past Friday night, Israel and Chris Tomlin were at Conseco Fieldhouse here in Indianapolis. It was an evening probably unlike any other that this venue has seen. There were thousands of people singing and praising God together. It was a great place to be on a Friday night.
In a stirring testimony, Israel shared with us that he had been conceived out of wedlock and that his mother was advised to have an abortion. At the time, late-term abortions were not en vogue, so it is more than likely that the pressure to have an abortion was heaviest on this woman before Israel’s father abandoned her. How or why she carried this child despite the message around her, we don’t know. But we did hear how a woman crossed the street one day to talk to her and to let her know that God has not forgotten here—that He loves her and cares about her. That changed her life and the life of the son she would deliver a month or so later.
Israel has ministered to thousands around the world because of this simple message of love. His music is sung in churches far and wide. It is probably safe to say that his ministry has helped to change lives. And all because a young woman said “No” to abortion and “Yes” to God’s unconditional love.
A butterfly in the Amazon rain forest flutters its wings. The air stirs and a small whisper of air moves past the ferns, gathering moisture from the fronds.
