On the backside of the Darwin anniversary, it is only fitting that a puzzle of mammoth proportions should arise from the Southern California soil. It is what scientist might call a whale of a find, and by their own time lines, it does not fit easily into the time-scape and theories science may espouse.
Herein is the conundrum that I would love to hear someone tackle for me: How do the bones of a whale that supposedly lived between 10,000 to 1,800,000 years ago (that’s some scientific swag!) end up 10 feet below the skeletal remains of a mammoth that lived about 500,000 years ago?
It would seem that the area would have been submerged, covered by enough water to support a whale (unless it beached itself), drained and covered over with enough soil (10 feet to be exact) to support a mammoth (unless it went swimming), and even then, gotten covered again by enough soil to keep both hidden from view or detection until a backhoe happens across a tusk.
It’s not the sort of news story that will raise many eyebrows—probably read and taken at face value by most. But keep in mind that the time periods in which these two creatures existed (according to science) overlap by something like 1.3 million years. If the whale dates to greater than 500,000 years, then no problem. The ebb and flow of water and soil could well have occurred as laid out above. However, using the scientists’ own dating, it’s possible that both of these creatures roamed the seas/land at the same time. Or to the other extreme, that the lower-level find (the whale) actually was alive more recently than the higher-level find (the mammoth).
OK, so even my head is starting to hurt!
Here’s the point: Science may not have the answer as to how the sea creature ended up at a level below the land creature even though the sea creature may have been alive after the land creature had become extinct. Science may not be able to answer when these creatures lived with ANY certainty. And science may not be able to look at the find and deny a flood of epic proportions that could have deposited both remains there within a relatively short time frame.
Scientists will continue to support theories on creation and evolution, and may come up with some plausbile theories on this story as well. It will be interesting to see what they come up with.
